What Is Alpha-Stim Therapy?

The Alpha-Stim AID device works by gently helping your nervous system regain balance through CES (Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation). Your nervous system plays a big role in how you feel—it helps manage your mood by sending signals through chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.

When these chemicals get out of balance or their signals aren’t working quite right, it can affect how your brain processes emotions. That’s when things like anxiety or depression can start to show up.

Everyone’s experience with Alpha-Stim is a little different. Some people feel better right away, while others may need to use it a few times before noticing results.

  • One of the most comforting things about Alpha-Stim is how its effects build over time—each session gently reinforces the benefits of the last. That means as you continue using it, you’ll likely need it less and less to feel the same sense of calm or relief.

    For clients using Alpha-Stim to manage anxiety, you might begin with daily sessions lasting 20 to 60 minutes. As your nervous system begins to settle and your symptoms ease, many people find they can gradually reduce how often they use it—sometimes moving to every other day, or even just once a week.

    If you’re using Alpha-Stim for pain, it can be just as effective on an as-needed basis. And because the results are cumulative, you’ll probably notice that over time, your pain relief lasts longer, and fewer treatments are needed to feel your best.

    • Most people experience relief from anxiety from their very first treatment with Alpha-Stim. You may use your Alpha-Stim on an as-needed basis for your anxiety, or at regular intervals such as daily or every other day.

    • While some people may experience better, longer sleep after just one treatment, it typically takes at least 2 to 3 weeks for insomnia to improve with Alpha-Stim. In some cases, it could take over a month of 2-3 treatments a week. 

  • Depression symptoms can take the longest to abate. It often takes an average of three or more weeks for a significant change to occur, although some people feel relief within a matter of days.
    *Alpha-Stim is FDA-cleared for anxiety, insomnia, and pain only, with approval for depression outside of the United States.

  • Alpha-Stim effectively treats your anxiety, insomnia, depression, and pain. For some conditions, results are experienced immediately and for others a small amount of time and persistence provides needed relief and results.

  • Insurance coverage varies by policy. Durable medical equipment coverage is often required to obtain some level of reimbursement for Alpha-Stim devices. Indigo Bloom Counseling does not bill private carriers but will assist customers by providing a paid invoice and a Statement of Medical Necessity. This statement is typically required by the insurance carrier if the device is covered.

    The HCPCS code for the Alpha-Stim AID is E0732 and the Alpha-Stim M is E1399.

    If you have a flex spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA), you may use these to pay for treatments, or to purchase an Alpha-Stim.

  • In the United States, a licensed healthcare practitioner needs to write a prescription for the device to be purchased.

    If you are interested in purchasing an Alpha-Stim unit, speak to Elizabeth (LCPC) to see if you would be a good canidate for the prescription. If you meet the U.S. qualifications for the prescription, she can order the unit for you.

    For the rest of the world (outside of the USA), Alpha-Stim is available over the counter.

  • There has been no evidence of drug interaction in 40 years of research and use of Alpha-Stim.

    Medication change is a decision that should be discussed with your healthcare practitioner.

    • Contraindications:

      Alpha-Stim is not recommended for individuals with cardiac pacemakers or implanted defibrillators. 

    • Common Side Effects:

      Headaches: Reported in a small percentage of users.

      Skin Irritation: This can occur at the electrode sites, particularly in light-skinned individuals.

      Dizziness: This can be experienced, especially if the intensity is set too high. 

    • Contraindications:

      Alpha-Stim is not recommended for individuals with cardiac pacemakers or implanted defibrillators. 

    Other Rare Reported Adverse Events:

    Rare reports include burns on earlobes, severe tinnitus, and severe gastrointestinal distress.

    There is no risk of overuse and no harmful interactions with medications or other treatment modalities that you may be using.

  • You will need a healthcare provider's prescription if you live in the United States and want to try Alpha-Stim.

    You will have to contact your insurance company to find out if there is any coverage or reimbursement for purchasing the device.
